Weather Calendar Test

For safety critical planning consult with official weather channels such as NIWA or MetService.

We take no responsibility for incorrect weather forecasts.

Welcome to a test run of ‘Weather on your Calendar’.

Click the relevant button and follow instructions, to subscribe via your default calendar app. If prompted, select daily updates. The weather forecast should appear as a daily event in your calendar, for easy weather reference when completing non-safety-critical planning or scheduling.

Why does this exist?

Because I wanted to see the weather on my calendar when planning outdoor activities, and if I’ve created this for myself, I may as well make it available to others.

How does it work?

Each day this website gets the weather for the listed locations from the OpenWeather API, and adds them to an .ics file. This is a file that can be read by a calendar. When you subscribe to the weather calendar file, your calendar will check the calendar file at set intervals and update your calendar when the file changes.

Why doesn’t the button work for me?

If you are opening the button in a browser that doesn’t recognise a calendar file, it will not work. This includes the browser built into FaceBook Messenger. Open this website using most stand-alone browsers, and you should be prompted to open a link in your calendar.

Can I add it directly to a calendar application that isn’t the default opened by my browser?

Yes, go to your calendar application and find ‘add new calendar’ or similar. Choose to add by URL. Copy the link from the button on this website and paste it into the relevant field. Exact instructions for this will depend on what calendar application you use. As long as it can read a .ics file it should work.
